My Olympus E-500 came! Only downside, the lens hasn’t. Since I can’t really post anything about the new DSLR I’m going to post about my other new camera!

Meet Flap-Jack

Now Flap-Jack needs a good cleaning. I opened the box and started snapping pics, so please overlook his grime and grit. As for the name, I have no idea where it came from, but it fits in my nutso little mind.

All photos taken today are with my old Point and Shoot, so no comments on the quality k?

This is the basic idea of a TTV shot (through the viewfinder)

You take an older camera with a huge viewfinder (In my case I’m using a Kodak Duraflex 3) and shoot through the viewfinder with your camera. Typically a sleeve or something of the sort is needed to block excess light (I totally didn’t use one today) and you use a better camera than a point and shoot.

But the results are interesting. I can’t wait to see what happens when everything is set up as it should be and I have the new camera.

I’m hoping (knock on wood) that the lens will be here tomorrow. If not, you may be watching my meltdown on CNN tomorrow.

I just want to take a kick ass photo

The title says it all. I just want to take the type of picture that makes you stop and stare. I want bokeh (pretty blurry background) and dew drops. I want TTV shots of old houses and landscapes that will bring you to tears. I want it all.

I currently own a point and shoot. It’s a HP PhotoSmart R837. It’s not the best camera in the world but it served it’s purpose.

I’ve struggled with buying a DSLR camera for over a year now. I couldn’t justify the cost to buy a new one and was unable to find a used one that was in my price range. I read about Nikon’s, Cannon’s and Pentax. I compared Sony to Pentax and then the winner to Olympus. By the end of each day my head hurt.

During my search for the perfect camera I decided the most important features for me were the following-
1. Live View (The point and shooter in me wanted this so badly)
2. 10 plus megapixels
3. In body stabilization

What did I end up with you’re asking? Well…. I just bought an Olympus E-500. Guess what? It has none of the features I thought were most important. Why did I buy this one? It was on sale, there were less than 45 seconds left to bid on Ebay and I went for it.

I started freaking as soon as I won. What the hell am I going to do with an 8 megapixel camera? It doesn’t have live view and no internal stabilization.

I hit my head on the desk, then realized I now own a DSLR.

Me. I did. Fuck yeah!! (Little excited if you can’t tell)

But I know nothing about this. Zip.

I’ve searched online and surprisingly there is little info on the transition from p&s to DSLR. So that’s where this blog comes in. We can learn together. You can laugh at my mistakes and celebrate with me when I do something right.

The camera should be here Wednesday or so.

1st lesson? um.. well apparently you must have a lens to start out with. I figured it would take some basic photo’s without it, but it doesn’t. ( I ordered one, but that’s another blog post….)
